Stephen Linn Akers died from bladder cancer on April 1, 2024. He is survived by his loving daughters, Torey and Louise Akers, both of Brooklyn, NY, and a number of dear family and friends.
He was the devoted husband of Gertrude “Giddy” Bancroft Akers, his wife of forty years, who died February 13, 2023. Born October 14, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri, Stephen, known as Steve, was the only son of John D. Akers and Louise W. Akers.
Steve held a B.A. from Davidson College, an M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and an M.B.A. from Columbia University. He was a member of the San Gabriel Country Club in California, the Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland, the Racquet and Tennis Club in New York City, and the Union Boat Club in Boston. Steve also served three years as the Press and Cultural Attaché at the American Embassy in Cairo, Egypt. He worked as an Analyst, Fund Manager and Managing Director at Scudder Stevens and Clark in Boston, New York and Los Angeles.
He served as a United Way volunteer and a Senior Fellow at Huntington Gardens and Library in San Marino, CA. Steve was a wonderful husband and father. He’ll be remembered for his intelligence, humor, and generosity and will be deeply missed. A private memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
