Rita (McCarthy) O'Neill, died June 24 at McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich, Mass., of congestive heart failure. She was 98.
Ms. O'Neill, of Westwood and Brewster, Mass, was born in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of William and Josephine McCarthy. She was a graduate of Lowell Teachers College (now the University of Massachusetts, Lowell). She married John O'Neill and taught elementary school for many years in the Needham school system. An artist, craftsperson, world traveler, and sharp dresser, she was also a kind, loving, and generous wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. A widow for more than five decades and also predeceased by daughter Laraine and daughter-in-law Maureen O'Neill, she was dignified, intelligent, moral, strong-willed, independent, patient, and forgiving. She will be sorely missed. She leaves her brother William McCarthy Jr., her cousin Robert Murphy, her son Jack O'Neill of Quincy, Mass.; her daughter Cate O'Neill and husband Ben McKelway of Plymouth, Mass.; her grandson Jamie O'Neill, his fiancée Liz Sullivan, and great grandson Owen O'Neill of Gloucester, Mass.; and her granddaughter Molly O'Neill Haaga and her husband Tim Haaga of Providence, R.I.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St. (off Route 109) Westwood on Wednesday June 27th from 4-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning June 28th at 10am in St. Agnes Church, Medford St., Arlington. Interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
