Hurley, Richard D. of Westwood, MA, loving husband of Ellen Marie (Daly) Hurley, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2021. Born on May 3, 1941 to Joseph and Ruth Hurley, Richard grew up in Hyde Park, MA and worked in a soda shop where he met his wife Ellen. After earning his degree in Law Enforcement from Northeastern University, Richard, or "Dick" as he was referred to by many, joined the Westwood Police Department in 1970 as a Patrolman. In 1980, Dick was promoted to Sergeant and during his time in Westwood was one of the founding members of the Police Explorers Program. In 1989, Dick became Chief of the Medfield Police Department. He served the Medfield Police Department and community for 16 years before retiring in 2005. Among many other things, Chief Hurley had greatly expanded and improved communications and cooperation between the police and the school department in Medfield. Chief Hurley was also a founding member of the Norfolk County Chief of Police Association, serving as Secretary-Treasurer since its inception in 1994. In his retirement, Dick continued as a member of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association and Program Coordinator at the South Suburban Police Institute in Foxboro. Further into his retirement, Dick enjoyed cooking, traveling, and spending time with his wife, daughter, and granddaughters. He was a licensed pilot and very much enjoyed flying Cessna's out of Norwood Airport.

In addition to his beloved wife of 58 years, Ellen, he was the loving father of Jennifer Hurley of Needham and the late John Patrick Hurley, and "Pa" to Mariah and Gabrielle Hurley of Westwood. Richard is survived by his sister Ruth Kamens of Norton and is preceded in death by his sister Gertrude Leen of Hingham, his brothers Daniel Hurley of Hyde Park and James Hurley of South Weymouth and sister Jean Noris of Randolph. He was the brother-in-law to Carole Narciso of Norwood and the late John Narciso, Jr. Richard is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Richard was a member of the Army National Guard from 1961 to 1967.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours in Saint Margaret Mary Church, 845 High St., Westwood on Thursday May 20th from 3-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Margaret Mary Church on Friday morning May 21st at 10am. Interment at New Westwood Cemetery.
