NORTON - Phyllis (Buda), of Kennebunk, Maine, and formerly of Ogunquit, Maine, and Needham, Massachusetts passed away on May 4, 2012.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Lawrence Richard Norton, and leaves behind her three children, Dr. Kimberly Anne Norton Butler and husband William of New Canaan, Connecticut, Lt. Colonel Dana Anthony Norton and wife Patricia of Washington, D.C., and daughter Stacie Norton Bennett and husband Gregory of Bellingham, MA, and her beloved nine grandchildren, Jackson, Nicolas, Graham, Lilly, Savannah, Benjamin, Harrison, Calvin, and Vivian. She is also survived by her brother Francis Buda and wife Carol of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and her sister Evangeline Buda of Rockland, Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her mother Clotilda Ciampa Buda and her father Francis Orlando Buda both of Cambridge, Massachusetts where her father served as curator of the Longfellow House for 50 years before becoming part of the National Parks Service.
Born in the North End of Boston, MA on May 13, 1937, she eventually moved to Cambridge, MA where she attended the Russell School and later graduated from Cambridge High and Latin in 1955. She spent her entire life teaching dance, beginning her dance training at the age of 3 at the studio of Katherine Dixon, eventually going on to teach for 28 years at the Wellesley Recreation Department in Wellesley, MA and 15 years at the Boston and Cambridge Centers for Adult Education as well as in various locations throughout New England. Exhibiting an indomitable spirit throughout her life, she was an inspiration to all she met. As a friend, mentor, and role model she exemplified the concept of service through all her many volunteer activities including work at the Ogunquit Playhouse, a volunteer for York Hospital, in York, ME, a two-term president of the Ogunquit Women's Club, a Rotarian, a board member for the Portland Ballet, and a long-time member and past -president of the Dance Teacher's Club of Boston. She touched so many lives in so many ways, and her presence will be sorely missed. There will be no visiting hours. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in her honor in St. Martha's Church, 30 Portland Road (Rte. 1), Kennebunk, ME on Saturday May 12, 2012 at 10:00 am. All who knew Phyllis and her family are welcome and encouraged to attend.
