Walsh – Joseph P. Jr., 83, of Westwood, passed away Wednesday May 5, 2010 while in residence at Sunrise Assisted Living of Norwood. Joseph’s first wife, Mary E. (McCurdy) Walsh, died in 1974. His second wife, Natalie A. (Thomas) Woodward Schmatzler Walsh died in 2005. He is survived by a daughter: Mary E. Walsh of Norwood and four sons: William J. Walsh and his wife Lauren of Grafton, Joseph “Jay” K. Walsh and his wife Kathryn of Franklin, John N. Walsh and his wife Jaynellen of Walpole and Michael C. Walsh and his wife Margaret of Milton; sixteen grandchildren: Meaghan, Erin, Kevin, Kerry, Courtney, Stephanie, Christopher, Brian, Marybeth, Jennifer, Kimberly, Patrick, Timothy, Thomas, Margaret and Elizabeth. Joseph is also survived by Natalie S. Woodward of Needham and Laura E. Schmatzler of Norwood.
Joseph was born in Milton, son of the late Joseph P. and Frances (Troy) Walsh. He grew up in Dorchester, served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a graduate of Boston College High School and Boston College with a B.S. degree in Mathematics. He worked as an insurance actuary for Savings Bank Life Insurance Company of Massachusetts for over 25 years, retiring as Senior Vice President in 1984. He served as director of Savings Bank Life Insurance Company of Massachusetts from 1992 to 2006 and served on the board’s audit and investment committees. He also served on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Policyholders Protective Board. Joseph served for many years as an advocate for retarded citizens. He was a member of the South Norfolk Association for Retarded Citizens, served on the Massachusetts Association for Retarded Children’s board and chaired their governmental affairs committee at the time the mental health reform bill was passed ensuring basic rights for retarded citizens. He served for many years as a director of Xaverian Brothers High School. Joseph was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church and the Norwood Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing golf, coaching his sons little league baseball teams, organizing activities for the area retarded citizens and summers on Cape Cod.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St. (off Route 109) Westwood on
Friday May 7th from 5-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning May 8th at 10am in St. Timothy’s Church, 650 Nichols St., Norwood. Interment with military honors at Old Westwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joseph’s memory to Lifeworks, 789 Clapboardtree St., Westwood, MA 02090. The family would like to express our thanks for the compassionate care provided for Joseph by the talented staffs of Sunrise of Norwood, VistaCare, his home health aide and his physician.
