Deacon Joseph M. Messina, age 87, of Westwood, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Joseph was the dear and devoted husband of Mary Geraldine (Fitzpatrick) for 64 years. Loving father of Joseph Jr. and his wife Aimee of Medfield, John and his wife Bonnie of Medfield, Mary Amirault and her late husband Gerard of Walpole, Paul and his wife Barbara of Walpole, and Julie and her husband Brant of Millis. Cherished grandfather, “Papa”, of thirteen and adored great-grandfather of eight. Dear brother of Robert Messina of Kissimmee, FL.
Born in Boston, Joseph was a graduate of BC High, Boston College and Boston College Graduate School. He was an ordained Deacon for the Archdiocese of Boston for forty-seven years, class of 1977 and served in many parishes. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving as a Lieutenant. He was deeply devoted to his family, his church and his country.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St., Westwood on Thursday February 8th from 4-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning February 9th at 10am in St. Margaret Mary Church, 845 High St. Westwood. Interment with Military Honors at New Westwood Cemetery.
