NEWELL - John Louis Jr., 79, of Dedham, passed away March 2, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 57 years--Emily Milliken Newell. Also survived by his children: John L. Newell III of Seattle, Katherine H. Newell of Watertown and Dr. Susan M. Newell and daughter-in-law Lori Pellitier of Exeter, RI. Also survived by his sister Anne N. and Philip Robertson of Milton and his sister-in-law Judith W. Newell of Hudson. He was predeceased by his brother Franklin S. Newell.
Louis was employed for 27 years by the Bank of New England, the Boston Company for 12 years and Seaward Mgt. He attended the Park School, and was graduated from Noble & Greenough School Class of 1953 and Harvard College class of 1957.
He was a member of The Country Club, Miramichi Salmon Assoc, Atlantic Salmon Assoc, Society of Colonial Wars, Tihonnet Club, Black Brook Salmon Club and Thursday Evening Club. He was on the boards of the Harvard Varsity Club, Noble & Greenough School, HAA, Director of Norfolk & Dedham Group, Freedom Trail and Harvard Happy Committee. He was also on the boards of the Eye & Ear Hospital, Faulkner Hospital and Brigham & Women's Hospital.
He was an active sportsman, playing golf, football, hockey, fishing and curling. At the 2014 Commencement at Harvard he was awarded the Harvard Medal by President Drew Faust for outstanding achievement at the school. He was also awarded the HAA Alumni Award, the Jas. R. Hamlen '04 Award and the Varsity Club Award in 2008.
A celebration of Louis' life will be held on Friday March 20th at 2pm at the First Parish Church, 382 Walnut St., Brookline. Police have restricted parking at church.
