Jones – Horace C. II, a long-time resident of Chestnut Hill, PA and more recently of South Dartmouth and Westwood, MA passed away on Wednesday June 8, 2011. He was 94.
Mr. Jones grew up in Conshohocken, PA where his family was prominent in textiles manufacturing and banking. He was the son of Spencer Loch and Katherine Eastwick Jones. Mr. Jones attended Plymouth Meeting Friends School; Episcopal Academy, Overbrook, PA; The Hill School, Pottstown, PA; Princeton University (1938); and held honorary degrees from Philadelphia College of Textiles & Sciences and Spring Garden College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1946 in both the U.S. and European theatres and was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. In 1938 Mr. Jones joined Lees & Sons Company, the carpet and yarn manufacturer, as Assistant Treasurer and rose to President in 1960. He became a Vice President of Burlington Industries when it acquired Lees Carpets in 1960. Mr. Jones retired as Chairman and CEO of Burlington in 1978. During his business career, Mr. Jones served on the Board of Directors of Burlington Industries, Union Carbide Company, Union Camp Corporation, Wachovia Bank & Trust, Beneficial Savings Bank of Philadelphia, Provident Mutual Insurance Company of Philadelphia, and Russell Reynolds Associates. Mr. Jones was involved in numerous religious, cultural and civic philanthropic pursuits. He was a Knight of Malta and contributed and participated in many church and parish activities in both Philadelphia and South Dartmouth, MA where the family moved in 1990. He was Chairman and President of Chestnut Hill Hospital in 1979-1980 and President of the Travelers Aid Society of Philadelphia in 1954-1955. Mr. Jones was also an avid gardener and golfer, having been named the Philadelphia area Junior Golf Champion in 1937. While he had a long, successful business career, the love of his life was his wife and family. He married Helen Allen in November, 1940 and together they raised seven children. Mr. Jones was a devoted husband and took loving care of his wife, who fought her own illness, until she passed away in 2006.
Mr. Jones is survived by his cherished sister, Katherine Muckle and his children: Spencer Jones of Westwood, MA; Margaret Connors of Sugar Hill, NH; Joseph Jones (1946-2009) of Wyndmoor, PA; Joy Marsh (1951-2008) of Chestnut Hill, PA; Conrad Jones of Hellertown, PA; Ann Cole of Fairfield, CT; and Katherine Stillwell of Dedham, MA. He also leaves 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Margaret Mary Church in Westwood, MA on Friday June 17th at 10 am. Memorial services will be held in both Philadelphia, PA and South Dartmouth, MA at a time to be announced.
