Hildegard Elisabet Wachob

July 10, 1928 — February 14, 2010

Wachob - Hildegard Elisabet, 81, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, passed away on February 14th at Clark House in Westwood, Massachusetts, after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson's and spinal cancer.

Hildegard was born in Breitenau, Germany in 1928 to Pastor Ernst and his wife, Caroline Henn. She was the second oldest of eight children; five of her siblings survive her. Hilde's life was defined by her devotion to her family. Her youth was marked by hard work caring for younger brothers and sisters, hikes with her father in the German countryside, playing the organ at church, and attending hotel management school.

She married James Wachob in 1955 and for 35 years they lived in many different countries as a Foreign Service couple, including Austria, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, the Central African Republic, Swaziland, and West Germany. She was employed as an administrative assistant in the American embassy in Prague and as a teacher of German in the American consulate general in Frankfurt during her husband’s assignment in those cities. She was engaged in local community welfare activities during her family’s residence in the Central African Republic and in the Kingdom of Swaziland.

She loved caring for her husband, her children, and grandchildren. Her home and garden were an inspiration to many. Hundreds of houseguests were privileged to enjoy her hospitality. She loved to read, to walk, and to pray.

She was an ardently faithful woman and spoke of the joy it would be to meet her Maker. She taught by example: her quiet dignity, her stoicism, and her complete selflessness.

She is survived by her husband James of Chevy Chase, Maryland, her daughter Juanita Allen Kingsley and husband Victor Kingsley of Dedham, Massachusetts, and son Richard and wife Mary of Westwood, Massachusetts. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ursula, Colin, and Aaron, all of whom adored her.
