FITZGIBBON, Geraldine "JoJo", age 87 of Wrentham, MA, died peacefully on January 18th of pneumonia. Originally from Jamaica Plain, JoJo moved to The Wrentham Development Center (formerly known as Wrentham State School) while in her early 30's and called Wrentham home for nearly 60 years. She was a well-known resident of the facility.
JoJo is survived by her loving sister, Carole Gagnon of Norwood, (formerly of Walpole), her devoted brother-in-law, John Harrington of Westwood and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Margaret Fitzgibbon. Her younger sister, Maureen (Fitzgibbon) Harrington of Westwood, passed away in December.
Despite her developmental disabilities, JoJo lived an extraordinary beautiful life. She loved and was loved. She showed affection to everyone she met (particularly men), by holding and kissing their hands. She was a fixture at family events and especially enjoyed Christmas and birthday parties--opening gifts with reckless abandon was a specialty.
JoJo adored scarfs and hats, clothespins, shoelaces, track suits and stuffed animals. Her bed overflowed with these creatures great and small—gifts from many devoted family members young and old. She loved green beans but hated broccoli---and she let you know it. JoJo even made it to Walt Disney World, something many people only dream of.
JoJo successfully navigated a challenging life with grace. She also successfully taught an extended family how to love unconditionally. She will be missed.
JoJo's family would like to thank the staff of The Wrentham Development Center for the decades of empathetic and dignified care they provided to JoJo and other residents.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St., Westwood on Sunday January 24th from 2-4pm.
