The family of Gerald "Gerry" MacDonald announces with great sorrow his passing on March 27, 2021. Gerry always had a twinkle in his blue eyes and an impish grin that drew many loyal and cherished friends to him over the years. His sharp mind knew no boundaries and he was always interested in the newest and latest thing and keeping up with the times. He not only kept up with the times, he often surpassed them! His love of fast cars (and hot rods) was well known among his family. Somewhat of a secret daredevil, at age 81, his latest vehicle was a sports car with a supercharged turbo. Never one to sit on the sidelines, Gerry lived his life with gusto and purpose alongside his beautiful wife and partner in life, Karen.
Gerry's sense of humor was legendary. He was genuinely interested in other people and loved hearing their stories and tales of life. He could strike up a conversation with just about anybody and usually had them chuckling and smiling in a few minutes. Gerry had an agile mind and quick wit - he was extremely hard-working, smart as a whip, energetic, and could be quite charismatic. The successful businesses that he grew from the ground up utilized all of these talents. He could be hard-nosed at times, but it was always a desire to uplift and support the people he loved. We all knew it came from a place of deep love and caring.
His love of family was steady and strong. He was an enduring anchor and support to his family, always there to offer a bit of advice and guidance. He also loved deeply his extended MacDonald family from Boston up to Nova Scotia where he leaves behind his 3 siblings and many cousins, aunts, and uncles. He adored the Maine coast and all things to do with water, boating (fast, of course), and nature. Affectionately dubbed "Papa" by his grandkids, they reveled in his humor, silliness, and perpetual support of their dreams.
Born to Sarah and William MacDonald in Boston, MA on August 25, 1939, Gerald is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Karen MacDonald. He leaves behind his 3 children, Michael MacDonald of Longmont, Colorado, Neil MacDonald of Bermuda Dunes, California, and Laura Richardson of Lyons, Colorado, 2 step-children Robert Slawsby (CA) and Danielle Slawsby (CA), 3 grandchildren Henry Richardson (CO), Cate Richardson (CO), and Maria MacDonald (CA) as well as 4 step-grandchildren, Alexander, Benjamin, Jonathan, and Victoria Slawsby. (CA).
Gerry was our loving CHAMPION and a wonderful husband, father, son, grandfather, and friend. His memory lives on in each of us as we carry onward and lay him to rest. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are sent to St. Jude's Research Hospital in his name.
