BIGELOW - George M. "Reese" passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on 03/09/2012 at the age of 90. He was born in Scott's Bay, Nova Scotia, the son of the late George and Florence Bigelow.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Jacquelyn (Watson). He is also survived by his children, Linda and her husband Richard Osterberg of Newton Highlands, MA, Kathy Kosner of Springfield, GA and Laurie Drucker of Attleboro, MA, 7 grandchildren -- Rick Osterberg and his wife Jess, Erich Osterberg and his wife Laura, Joshua Osterberg and his wife Jocelyn, Scott Kublin and his wife Jennifer, Bradford Kublin and his wife Rosie, Keith and Kimberly Drucker. He is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his brother Curtis Bigelow of Westwood, MA and Elaine Higgins of Middleton, Nova Scotia.
Reese was a resident of Westwood for 85 years. He graduated from the Colburn School and attended Boston Trade School and the Wentworth Institute. He served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years during the heart of WWII on the destroyer USS Rhind #404 and after doing convoy duty in the North Atlantic to Murmansk, the ship was sent through the Panama Canal to escort aircraft carriers in the war in the Pacific, such as Iwo Jima, Tinian, etc. A mechanical engineer, he was employed for 30 years at RCA Aerospace Division in Burlington, MA and was the Superintendent of Fabrication. He was involved in the development of the LEM module and the Rendezvous Radar to bring the Eagle off the moon and connect up with the Columbia, the main capsule, which had orbited the moon, and many other aerospace projects.
Funeral services will be private and memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Parish United Church of Westwood, 340 Clapboardtree Street, Westwood, MA 02090 or the charity of your choice.
