Ferdinand C. "Ferny" Flaman, of Westwood, formerly of Dysart, Saskatchewan, Canada, passed away at age 85 on June 23rd, 2012.
Beloved husband of Jeanne M. (Magner) Flaman for 65 years. Devoted father of the late Terrance E. Flaman married to Cheryl (Sullivan) of Walpole, Laura M. (Flaman) Fletcher married to David of Barrington RI and Ferny K. married to Bonnie (Brock) of Walpole. Loving grandfather to Kelly D. Flaman, Fiancée to Tyler Roberts of Charlestown, Todd E., married to Sarah (Bornemann) of Atlanta, GA and Eric K. and Lisa L. of Walpole, and great-grandfather of Molly L. Flaman of Atlanta, GA.
Ferny went to work for the New Jersey Devils after retiring from Northeastern University as a special scout and has worked there until his passing.
Flaman was inducted into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990; he is also an inductee of the, the Rhode Island Reds Hall of Fame, the Northeastern Hockey Hall of Fame, the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame, The Boston Garden Hall of Fame, the Beanpot Hall of Fame, the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame, and Received the Hobey Baker Legends Award, He was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1982 and Hockey East Coach of the year in 1988. Flaman retired from coaching the Northeastern ice hockey team in the spring of 1989, with the legacy of being the Coach with the most wins in Northeastern hockey history. During his tenancy at Northeastern, the Northeastern Huskies won four Beanpots, and ECAC D1 champions in 1982. Flaman is a product of the professional ranks and is somewhat of a National Hockey League icon. He starred in the NHL with the Boston Bruins (1946-50, 1955-61) and played with the Toronto Maple Leafs, (1950-55), winning the coveted Stanley Cup in 1951. He returned to the Bruins as captain from 1955-61. Flaman made the NHL All Star Team six times and was referred to by the legendary Gordie Howe as "the toughest defenseman I ever skated against." After retiring from the Bruins, Ferny was hired as player/coach of the Providence Reds (1961-65). From there, he worked in the World Hockey League as Coach/General Manager of the Fort Worth Wings and the Los Angeles Blades, franchises of the WHL.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St. (off Route 109) Westwood on Thursday June 28th from 1-4 and 6-8pm. A Memorial Service will be celebrated in The First Parish of Westwood United Church, 340 Clapboardtree St., Westwood on Friday morning June 29th at 10am. Interment private.
