Ellen Cregan Kitchen

d. June 18, 2021

Ellen Cregan Kitchen, MSN, RN, NP a longtime Westwood, MA resident passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2021. She passionately loved her husband & children, long walks, biking, traveling, and ice cold craft beers. Born with an extra helping of kindness, she was the heart and soul of her extended family. She was fiercely loyal to her friends and full of thoughtful gestures and advice.

Ellen was born and raised in Huntington, NY where she rose to minor celebrity status by winning her 8th grade slide dance contest. After attending John Glenn High School in Huntington she moved to Boston where she put herself through college earning a BSN from Boston University in 1982, later returning to BU to earn her MSN in geriatrics and NP certification in 1987.

She spent her career as a visiting nurse serving seniors mostly in disadvantaged communities in Boston. Usually riding her bike to her visits, she was often the only real outside contact for her patients and she worked hard to make their days brighter and their quality of life better. Her work in these communities was featured in a book by Suzanne Gordon titled Life Support: Three Nurses on the Front Lines. After becoming a mother, Ellen worked as a school nurse until her children graduated high school and then as a nurse at day care center for elderly and handicapped patients.

Ellen spent the last three years of her life ignoring the side effects of chemo to travel the US, hiking untold miles, climbing steep mountains and exploring the scenic wonders of National Parks. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, John; son John of Pawtucket RI, daughter Samantha of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren Elyjah, Charlotte Rose, and Gemma; 6 siblings, and too many cousins, nieces/nephews and dear friends to count. Services will be held at First Parish of Westwood, 252 Nahatan St, Westwood, MA on Friday June 25th at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to Dana Farber Cancer Institute by sponsoring Samantha's Boston Marathon run for her Mom or donate to Hale Reservation or Yellowstone Park.
