Elizabeth Gutterson

March 31, 1954 — September 24, 2023

Westwood, MA

Elizabeth Middleton Boles Gutterson of Westwood passed away peacefully on September 24, 2023, after a long illness. She was 69. Born in Boston to Russell S. and Margaret S. Boles, she grew up in Wellesley along with her three siblings Russell Laird Boles, Margaret Borden Boles and Douglas Luce Boles. She attended Tenacre Country Day School and Dana Hall School before graduating from Trinity College (CT). She worked as a trust officer for Cambridge Trust Company before moving to The New England Merchants National Bank, where she met her future husband, Eric Norman Gutterson. They were married at Trinity Church in Boston and lived in the Back Bay for a year before moving to Westwood to raise their three children, Elizabeth Middleton Gutterson, Caroline Constable Gutterson and Christopher Russell Boles Gutterson. In addition to being a full-time mother, she worked as a pre-school teacher in Westwood.

Elizabeth “Liz” will be remembered as a devoted wife to her husband as well as cherished mother to her children and loving grandmother “Bebe” to her six grandchildren. She was a beloved friend to so many people in her life. Her sweet disposition, beautiful smile, and love for family and friends shone through every day. Her love extended to the three dogs and two cats she and Eric welcomed into their home over the years, and it was a rare day that she couldn’t be found walking a dog in their neighborhood. As a strong Christian, her confidence in the life to come was a great comfort to her during her illness.

Liz is survived by her husband, Eric, her children Elizabeth Gutterson Lynch (Michael Joseph Lynch) of Dover, Caroline Gutterson Ward (Dana Ryan Ward) of Stratham, NH, and Christopher Russell Boles Gutterson of Westwood; her grandchildren Grace Finnegan Lynch, Margaret Boles Lynch, John Michael Lynch, Boden Russell Lynch, Olivia Emmavail Ward, and Eloise Caroline Ward, as well as her mother Margaret S. Boles of Osterville, brother Russell Laird Boles of Osterville, sister, Margaret Boles Fitzgerald of Boston, and an extensive circle of family and friends across generations who loved her so much. She is predeceased by her father, Russell S. Boles, Jr., MD (2019) and her brother, Douglas Luce Boles (2000). A Memorial Service will be held on November 4, 2023, at 10:00am at First Church and Parish of Dedham followed by a reception at The Charles River Country Club in Newton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
