Dorothea Wyman Thomas

June 3, 1935 — January 14, 2025

Weston, MA & Westwood, MA

Dorothea Wyman Thomas, a resident of Fox Hill Village in Westwood, died on January 14, at the age of 89. Born in Ithaca, New York, she was raised with her two brothers and sister in Weston, living on the Case Estates (then) owned by the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University where her father, Dr. Donald Wyman, the horticultural authority, and author, was Horticulturist.

She attended Weston High School, graduated from Concord Academy, and received her A.B. in 1957 from Smith College.

For 11 years she was Personnel Assistant at Harvard Medical School. In 1965, she married Roger M. Thomas, her husband of 58 years, who predeceased her. They moved to Weston 3 years later where she became a homemaker, raising their two children, Donald and Helen, and conducting several volunteer activities, among them, serving as Conservation Commissioner of the Town of Weston, as President of the Concord Academy Alumnae Association and as a Trustee of the School, and President of the Weston Garden Club. With her father, she helped to transform the landscape of her alma mater, Concord Academy, with a new landscaping and planting program. She also assisted her father with his revision in 1986 of his volume, Wyman’s Gardening Encyclopedia, for which she did all the typing and much of the checking and research work on the New and Expanded Edition.

In 1990, Dorothea returned to full-time work for 18 years, serving for most of that time as both Conservation Commission Administrator and Zoning Board of Appeals Administrator of the Town of Weston. After residing in Weston for 42 years, Dorothea and her husband moved to Fox Hill Village in Westwood in late 2009, where they remained active in various activities. In her later years, she resided at Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley.

She is survived by her son, Donald, and her daughter-in-law Sarah Perkins Thomas, of Natick, by her daughter, Helen T. Cressy, and her son-in-law, Jonathan B. Cressy, by her two grandchildren, Alden Thomas Cressy and Brooke Wyman Cressy, of Coto de Caza, CA, by her brother, John, of Durham, NC, and by her several nephews and nieces. Her brother, Donald, and sister, Barbara, predeceased her.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be made on her behalf to Elizabeth Seton Residence at elizabethseton.org/donate or by mail to 125 Oakland Street, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481-5338, or to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at cff.org/donate or by mail to 220 North Main Street, Suite 104, Natick, MA 01760.
