Daniel F. Scannell

Daniel F. Scannell, 83, of Westwood, Massachusetts, beloved husband of Eileen T. Golden and former husband of the late Janet M. Scannell (née Burke), died peacefully on August 16, 2024 in West Roxbury. 

Born on December 15, 1940, Dan was the eldest son of the late Patrick J. Scannell and Mary J. Scannell (née Fadden) of Brighton. He graduated from St. Columbkille’s in Brighton in 1958 and St. John’s Seminary in Brighton in 1962. Dan married Janet in 1966, with whom he lovingly raised three children, living in Boston, New Jersey, and Atlanta across his 30-year career at IBM. Dan and Janet were married for 35 years until her passing in 2001. 

Dan was an avid golfer and Boston sports fan, as well as a man of deep faith. He served as a lector at several parishes in the Boston area, and later in life he became a member of the Secular Franciscan Order alongside Eileen, whom he married in 2009. He will be remembered as a loving father and husband, and for his quick wit and generosity. 

Dan is survived and cherished by his wife, Eileen; three children, Daniel F. Scannell Jr. of Houston, TX (Ashley), Kevin P. Scannell of St. Louis, MO (Gail), and Julianne Fratarcangeli of Huntington, NY (Joseph); eight grandchildren; and six siblings, Thomas of Cheshire, CT (Diane), James of Needham (Agnes), John of Middleboro (Carol), Mary of Marietta, GA, Paul of Marietta, GA (Patti), and Patrick of Boston (Ellen). Eileen’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild, who warmly welcomed Dan into their family, will miss him dearly, as will the many friends and extended family members who loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Janet. 

Family and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St., Westwood on Thursday, August 22nd from 4-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 23rd at 10am in St. Denis Church, 157 Washington St., Westwood. Interment following the Mass at Couch Cemetery, Union St., Marshfield.
