Charles E. Mitchell Jr., “Charlie” of Mashpee, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home on January 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 96 years old. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born in Boston in 1929, Charles was a proud veteran of World War II, serving his country in the Philippines at the age of 17. He was a devoted son to his mother, Helen Devine of Westwood, and a beloved brother to Arlene, William "Billy", and Phillip, all of whom predeceased him.
Charles was a successful businessman, building a thriving career in real estate. He was known for his strong work ethic, his sharp mind, and his unwavering integrity. A long time resident of Westwood he eventually moved to New Seabury in Mashpee, Massachusetts where he enjoyed golf and made wonderful friendships.
Above all, Charles was a people person. He had a gift for connecting with others and making them feel seen and valued. He was loved by everyone he met, from his family and friends to his caregivers and the people he encountered in his daily life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a warm, generous spirit. He was an avid exerciser, enjoying running, swimming, and cycling until shortly before his passing.
In his final days, Charlie soaked up the views from his beloved Mashpee home, expressing gratitude for a life well-lived.
Charles was predeceased by his wife, Joan Mitchell (Millin). He is survived by his ex-wife, Patricia A. Mitchell (Sorenson), and his devoted children: Kevin (Cheryl) of South Dartmouth, Brian of Westwood, Thomas (Mary) of Medfield, Mary Ellen (Derek) of Petaluma, CA, and Nancy (Alan) of Newmarket, NH. He was predeceased by his children Paul Mitchell and Kathleen Mitchell.
He is also survived by his stepchildren James Armour of Medfield, Linda Donahue (Kevin) of Norfolk, John Armour (Lee) of North Falmouth, and was predeceased by Thomas Armour.
He is also survived by his 25 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Visitation in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St., Westwood on Wednesday morning January 29th from 9am – 10:30am. Following the Visitation, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Margaret Mary Church, 845 High St., Westwood at 11am. Interment with U.S. Army Military Honors at New Westwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles' memory to St. Francis House.
