On Sunday December 11th, 2022, Burt Abel Sr., who lived in Norwood, MA and spent Winters in Estero, FL for more than 20 years passed away peacefully at the age of 85. He was born to George and Grace Abel and was proudly third generation growing up in Westwood, MA. He leaves behind his beloved significant other Helen Toro, his former spouse Carol Abel, his three children and their spouses Burt and Michelle Abel; Anna and Rick LeBlanc; and Lynnie (Deceased) and Kevin McDonald along with eight grandchildren including Grace, Ryan, Molly, Kevin & Kyle McDonald; Jack & Carly LeBlanc; and Macy Abel who were his pride and joy.
Burt was a graduate of Westwood High School and Boston College. He (Trum) was an avid competitor in the many sports teams he enjoyed being part of and was part of the inaugural class inducted into the Westwood Sports Hall of Fame. Sports at all levels was an enormous part of his entire life including competing personally right up until this past Summer on the golf course. He loved following Boston College, all Boston sports teams and was one of the first season ticket holders with his treasured N.E. Patriots. Burt could always be found regardless of weather or score in his seat at Gillette from warm-ups until the final whistle was blown. Nothing however brought him more joy and happiness than watching his grandchildren playing on their sports teams. He was well known by every parent on the sidelines and would scout the opposing team for the kids.
Burt served in the U.S. Army and began his career as a teacher and coach including starting the first pop warner football league in Westwood, MA. He went on to become a successful sales executive in the steel industry and eventually acted on his entrepreneurial aspirations running and owning his own thriving business, Whaling City Iron during the last chapters of his professional career.
He was a longstanding and proud member of Brae Burn County Club and Estero Country Club for decades. He cherished tremendously the many friendships developed over the years and was a true and loyal friend to so many. He loved to compete in the tournaments as well as play in the countless matches where he was a terrific contender and very difficult to beat around the greens.
There will be a celebration of life on Saturday December 17th at 1:00PM, to be held at Brae Burn Country Club; located at 160 Fuller Street Newton MA. All are welcome. Services and the burial will be private.
