Audrey "Kay" (Kononen) Trewhella, 90, loving wife of 50 years of Robert H. "Bob" Trewhella, passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at Whitney Place in Natick, MA. Born in Detroit, MI on December 25, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Mathew and Hilda (Johnson) Kononen, and sister to the late Richard Kononen. Kay grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, graduating from "Soo" High in 1948, and St. Mary's School of Nursing (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) in 1952. Kay was a delivery room nurse at Wesson Maternity Hospital in Springfield, MA, until leaving to start her full-time job as "Mom" in 1954.
Kay lived in South Windsor, CT for 12 years, where she met and married Bob in 1969. They moved to Harrisburg, PA in 1977, where they would live until retiring to Fort Myers, FL. However, once grandchildren came along, they moved back to Boston in 2012 to be closer to family in New England.
As a full-time Mom, Kay was always there for her boys, and spent countless hours running them to and from music lessons, sports practices and games, etc. However, she made it clear that cooking and cleaning was not "women's work" insisting her sons learn those skills. It was always special to get home from school and find a snack waiting along with a hug. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, the women's bowling league, and her lifelong passion for painting theorems. In Harrisburg, she learned to play golf, and looked forward to her weekly golf league matches. Kay actively supported the Lady Keystone Open LPGA tournament each year at Hershey Country Club; she and Bob always hosted one of the golf pros at their home for the week. She was active in other charity and philanthropic causes too numerous to list. Bob and Kay loved to travel worldwide, and she especially enjoyed going to Finland, where she visited relatives in the town where her father was born. For many years, they visited New York City in early December to take in the holiday sights and the Rockettes Christmas Show.
Kay was an excellent cook, a skill enjoyed by countless family members and friends. She was compassionate and caring, a devoted wife and mother; she treated her sons' friends as her own, always with a kind word and, of course, something to eat. Her Lutheran faith was a core part of her life, and she is now home with God.
Besides her devoted husband Bob, Kay is survived by her three sons, Robert (Blanca) Woodard of Middletown CT, Stephen (Linda) Woodard of Marlborough MA, and Eric (Julia) Woodard of Westwood MA. She is also survived by her stepdaughter Tracy (Doug) Taylor of Phoenix AZ. Kay was predeceased by her stepdaughter Ruth Trewhella of Phoenix AZ and grandchild Lauren Woodard. She was survived by her grandchildren, Matthew Woodard of Farmington, CT, Daniel (Sue) Woodard of Lemoore CA, Sean Roderick of Dover NH, Nathan (Elizabeth) Woodard of Saratoga Springs NY, Sara Roderick of Truro MA, Caroline Woodard of Westwood MA, and Vivienne Woodard of Westwood MA. She is also survived by her special "fourth son" Robert (Tina) Gentino of Los Angeles CA.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family; a Memorial Service will be scheduled for a future date and time. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
