Ward, Alan A., of Westwood, MA, West Harwich, MA, and Hilton Head, SC; died peacefully at home at age 88 on June 25, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Joan (Feeney) Ward, and the late Inez (Washabaugh) Ward. Born on October 4, 1929 to the late David and Dorothy Ward, in New York City. Loving father to Stephanie of Foxboro, MA; John (J.D.) and wife Debbie of Littleton, MA; Andrew of Swarthmore, PA; and Michael and wife Olivia of El Cerrito, CA. Poppa to Christopher, Rachel, late Justin, Jared, Julia, Audrey, Natalie and Step-Poppa to Mark Gregory. Devoted to his rescued dogs: Roxie, Missy, Sky, Kate, Daisy, Leo.
Born and raised in New York City and Ludingtonville, NY. Attended Taft School and Swarthmore College. Received Master's in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University. Korean War Veteran, U.S. Army. Worked right after college for Conner Engineering in Danbury, CT; then entering the Army, he worked for the NSA in Washington, D.C. where he met his future wife, Joan. After discharge, they married and moved to Westwood. He worked for GTE for many years, then Raytheon, returning to GTE later in his career. They raised their 4 children in Westwood. After Joan's death in 1994, Alan met Inez Washabaugh at their favorite book club and they married in 1997. They traveled extensively both nationally and internationally, including exciting grandparent/grandchild summer adventures.
Alan was a skilled engineer; avid reader, traveler, accomplished downhill and cross-country skier, appreciative of the arts, ballet, opera, professional tennis and movies. He, above all, cherished time with his family. He was an active member of St. Timothy's Parish in Norwood, MA; Town of Westwood Appeals Board member for 44 years; volunteer for Westwood Senior Center tax preparation services; member of the Westwood Senior Men's Club and Westwood Historical Society.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St., Westwood on Friday, June 29th from 4-7pm. Funeral procession from the funeral home on Saturday morning June 30th at 9:30am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Timothy's Church, 650 Nichols St., Norwood at 10:30am. Interment private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alan's memory to: Animal Rescue League, Boston or Catholic Relief Services.
